How to Choose the Right Memorial

Important factors to consider when selecting a memorial that reflects your loved one’s life, traditions, and lasting legacy.

Losing a loved one is one of life’s most difficult moments. Choosing the right memorial is a meaningful way to honor their life, preserve their legacy, and create a place where future generations can come to reflect and remember. Here's a guide to help you make thoughtful and informed choices when selecting a headstone or monument.

1. Reflect Their Personality and Story

A memorial should be more than just stone — it should tell a story. Consider what made your loved one unique:

  • Were they spiritual, artistic, or adventurous?

  • Did they value simplicity or elegance?

  • What symbols or words represent their life best?

Think about including engravings, personal messages, or cultural symbols that reflect who they were. Some families choose custom shapes, photo etchings, or favorite quotes to personalize the stone.

2. Understand Cemetery Regulations

Before designing anything, it's important to check with the cemetery:

  • Are there size or material restrictions?

  • Can you include a photo, vase, or emblem?

  • What type of foundation is required?

Each cemetery has its own rules, and knowing them upfront can save time, money, and redesign efforts.

3. Choose a Durable Material

At Rumi Stone, nearly all of our memorials are crafted from premium granite, with select styles available in bronze. Granite is known for its strength, beauty, and resistance to weathering, making it the ideal choice for long-lasting memorials. Bronze is often used in plaques and companion markers and pairs beautifully with granite bases.

We do not work with softer, less durable materials like marble or limestone — we believe in providing families with quality that stands the test of time.

4. Pick a Meaningful Design

Design elements help tell the story visually. Think about:

  • Upright monuments, slant markers, or flat grave markers

  • Shapes like hearts, crosses, or book-style stones

  • Layout: space for future inscriptions (e.g., companion headstones)

  • Languages: many families prefer bilingual or culturally significant scripts

Work with a designer or engraving professional who can show you sketches or mock-ups before finalizing the design.

5. Set a Realistic Budget

Memorial costs can vary depending on:

  • Size and stone type

  • Level of customization

  • Added features (vases, photos, ledgers, etc.)

A trusted memorial provider will offer clear quotes and help you balance cost, quality, and sentiment.

6. Plan for Longevity and Maintenance

Ask about:

  • Engraving techniques (deep carving vs. laser etching)

  • Weather-resistant finishes

  • Stone sealants or toners for lasting color

A good memorial is one that stands beautifully for decades to come.

Understanding Different Types of Headstones

Learn the differences between flat markers, upright monuments, and bronze memorials to help you choose the right option.

Choosing a headstone is a deeply personal decision. It’s more than just a marker — it’s a tribute to a life lived, a story told in stone. Whether you’re pre-planning or honoring a loved one, understanding the different types of memorials can help you select one that suits your vision, values, and budget.

 1. Flat Markers

Simple, Low-Profile Elegance

Flat markers (also called lawn-level or flush markers) sit low to the ground, usually flat or slightly raised. They are one of the most economical and commonly accepted options in cemeteries.

Features:

  • Typically rectangular (e.g., 24x12 or 28x16 inches)

  • Made from granite or bronze

  • Can include names, dates, emblems, and even photos

  • Easier for cemetery maintenance

Best For:

  • Simple, clean memorials

  • Cemeteries with flat-marker-only policies

  • Single or companion burials

 2. Upright Monuments

Classic and Customizable

Upright headstones are vertical monuments that rise above the ground and offer more space for personalization. These are the most traditional style and are available in many shapes and sizes.

Features:

  • Made almost entirely of granite

  • Allows more text, images, and decorative elements

  • Can include vases, statues, or custom carvings

  • Highly visible from a distance

Best For:

  • Families seeking a bold, timeless tribute

  • Multi-name family monuments

  • Custom designs with detailed engraving

🟫 3. Bronze Memorials

Elegant, Low-Maintenance Beauty

Bronze markers offer a different look and feel — a smooth, metallic surface that’s often mounted on a granite base. They are known for their refined finish and resistance to weathering.

Features:

  • Made from cast bronze with raised lettering

  • Can include portrait inserts or emblems

  • Typically used in flat marker form

  • Cemeteries sometimes require them in specific sections

Best For:

  • Families who prefer a modern or polished look

  • Veterans (bronze memorials are standard in military cemeteries)

  • Low-maintenance memorials

🧭 Which One is Right for You?

When choosing a headstone, consider these questions:

  • What are the cemetery’s rules?

  • Do you prefer something simple or something that stands out?

  • Is there a cultural or religious tradition to honor?

  • Do you want room for future inscriptions?

At Rumi Stone, we help guide families through each step — from material selection to engraving, to design approval — ensuring the final memorial is a beautiful reflection of your loved one’s legacy.

The Memorial Design Process Explained

What to expect from consultation and design approval to production and final installation, step by step.

At Rumi Stone, we understand that creating a memorial is a deeply personal experience. That’s why we guide every family through a simple, respectful process to ensure the final headstone truly honors your loved one’s memory. Here's what to expect:

🗓️ 1. Consultation: Listening First

Every memorial begins with a conversation. During your initial consultation—whether in person, over the phone, or online—we’ll learn about your loved one, your vision, and your needs. We’ll ask about:

  • The cemetery location and its rules

  • Your preferred stone type and color

  • Desired shape and size

  • Engraving language, photos, vases, or religious symbols

This is also when we’ll talk about budget, timelines, and answer any questions you have.

✏️ 2. Custom Design & Layout

Once we understand your needs, our design team creates a custom layout. You’ll receive a detailed draft that includes:

  • Text layout with names, dates, and epitaphs

  • Font and engraving style (including Zapf Chancery, Lato, or calligraphic serif)

  • Placement of symbols, photos, or floral designs

We offer revisions at this stage to make sure everything is perfect before moving forward.

3. Design Approval

After the final design proof is approved by you and your family, we send the order to production. Some cemeteries may also require design approval, and we’re happy to coordinate that step on your behalf.

🛠️ 4. Stone Production & Engraving

The stone is cut and polished to your exact specifications. We then engrave or etch your design using industry-standard methods such as:

  • Sandblasting (for deep, crisp lettering)

  • Laser etching (for portraits or fine details)

If color is added, we use trusted paints like Akemi or Lithichrome for long-lasting results.

🪦 5. Delivery & Installation

Once completed, your stone is delivered to the cemetery and installed securely by licensed professionals. We align with cemetery regulations and ensure a respectful, careful installation process.
